Capturing a contributor

The term contributor is synonymous with author, artist, binder, press, etc. Also note that a contributor need not be an individual person.
Display name: this field allows you to control exactly how the contributor's name appears. By using both the Identity / surname and Sub-identity / first name fields you can store the contributor's name for retrieval. For example: Charles Dickens, William Kentridge, Chinese Press, Unknown, etc.
Identity / surname: the identity or surname of the contributor(s). This could be a person's surname, group name, organisational name, company name, etc. For example: Dickens, Kentridge; Johnson and Sons Ltd;
Sub-identity / first name(s): enter the first name in this field or some other kind of identification if the contributor(s) is unknown. For example: Charles, Kentridge, etc.
General date: enter the relevant date(s) of the contributor such as birth and death, or when a press started, etc. Use any date terminology but standardisation is advised for later retrieval, i.e. 1900-1968, 1900s, c1855, Early 20thC
Capturing via an item Description
Before assigning a Contributor to an item, check they are not already recorded. If so, select from the list of Contributors and click assign.
- Add a full name (display name), first name(s), then last name (identity).
Assigning a contributor
- To assign the new Contributor, select one from the list and click Assign. Note: always check the contributor does not already existing prior to adding.
- Once you have a Contributor assigned you can also enter the Relationship, i.e. Author, Binder, Artist, etc.
